Problem of the Day, version 2.0

Here is the problem of the day for February 17:

Metro Louisville trucks have spread 5,600 pounds (lbs.) of road salt over the last 2 days in Louisville.  How much road salt did they disperse each day?   If the city has 9 salt trucks, about how many pounds of salt can each truck carry each day?

Remember to use RUBS first...you may solve using any strategy (hint: standard algorithm or partial quotient are the ones we looked at closely in the fall!)

Octavia 2015 (i.e, SNOWDAY!!!!!)

Hey team!!!   It hasn't snowed for about an hour at my house (I hear there is one more band that will get us though).  So here is an update from my back porch as of 6:08pm Monday February 16:

            About 6 3/4 (6.75) inches

So....what's it like at your house??  Email me pics and I'll add on to this post so we can all see what life's been like for the past 24 hours!!  Give your measurement and fractions skills a shot and send me your estimated total :)

Zach has 5 1/4 inches:

Abby has about 6 1/2 inches in her yard:

Ty has 6 inches:

Problem of the Day...

Happy Snow Day Team!!   If anyone needs something to do with their kiddo, they can always review math concepts from this year.

Try this one kids:

Ms. Wilkinson has 316 pink jelly beans from Valentine's Day leftover.   If we are snowed in for 4 days, how many jelly beans can she eat daily to be sure she still has some on Thursday?
Challenge: If she is only awake for 14 hours each day, how many can she eat each hour before she runs out?

Battle of the Books!!!

On Thursday, eight members of Team Wilkinson participated in the 4th Grade Battle of the Books competition.  6 students comprised the TW team and 2 joined a blended group---dubbed "The Separatists"!!  Both teams played 2 rounds against teams from Ms. Clay's, Mr. Treacy's and Mrs. Fors' rooms; thorough comprehension and great teamwork were on display for sure!!!

When it was all said and done...The Separatists defeated Team Wilkinson by 1 point in the Grade Level competition!!   Congrats to Nathan (Team Captain) and Matthew for representing The Separatists; and to our crew of Ty (Team Captain), Caden, Jeremy, Abby, Adelle and Elizabeth for their strong showing.

6 students from our grade will be selected to represent Kenwood in the District Competition later this month.   Go Tigers!!!!

New Read Aloud!!

This week we started "Sophia's War", a narrative text about the Revolutionary War told from the perspective of a 12 year old girl.   So far, we are enthralled in our reading!! Team Wilkinson even slid in to rescue the reading when Ms. Wilkinson's voice went missing!!
