Wander and Wonder

Today Mrs. Cochran came in for lesson on selecting a topic for our opinion piece that we are passionate about!!  Team Wilkinson brainstormed several potential ideas and we look forward to finalizing our choice on Tuesday and beginning our pieces.

Our favorite part was "Wander and Wonder" where we exited the room to gather inspiration from the world around us!

Thanks for joining us Mrs. Cochran...we'll see you tomorrow!!

Best Science Day...EVER!!!

On Wednesday, we opened our classroom to Dr. Leah Siskind, a researcher with the UofL School of Medicine, and by all accounts...had the coolest day ever!!!!   Dr. Siskind built upon our knowledge of inherited traits by guiding us through a lesson on DNA!!  We learned about genetic coding and mutuations.  Did you know that humans share 99.9% of the same DNA and only identical twins have the exact same DNA?

The best part of the lesson was that it was hands on: Dr. Siskind helped us extract our own DNA sample to keep with us in a necklace.    Take a peek below at the process and ask your kiddo how we did this!!

Team Wilkinson would like to extend an extra special Thank You to Dr. Siskind for joining us for such a meaningful lesson.   Also, to Mrs. Brice and Mrs. Clayton who were able to help us with our activity.

The cloudy matter in the middle of the tube is our DNA:
