Last Monday, Team
Wilkinson and the rest of the 4th graders at Kenwood headed to
Churchill Downs for a lesson on the Economic Impact of the Kentucky Derby on
Kentucky. We learned that our state
brings in nearly $500 million every Derby Week!! It’s not just Churchill Downs that benefits
from this boom---hotels, restaurants, and local stores are also impacted.
Here is a look at our day. We started with a walking tour of the grounds, where we learned what the track is made of and what a Schooling Stall's purpose it. Then, we headed inside for a great lesson on the economy. We even had several student participate in this lesson!! Finally, we watched a movie about the history of the Derby and had time to roam the exhibits at the Museum. While we roamed, we could pretend to be a jockey, design our own silks and even place bets on races! We had a great day learning Kentucky history!!
Check us out....
(How accurate are these faces if you've ever been to the track?!?)
